Here are four easy flavor modifications and a recipe for the ideal stovetop cup of oatmeal. It's delicious, simple to make, and heart-healthy.
Ingredients:
BASE RECIPE
- ½ cup old fashioned rolled oats
- 1 cup water or milk
- pinch of sea salt
- ¼ teaspoon of ground cinnamon, optional
- ¼ teaspoon vanilla extract, optional
APPLE CINNAMON
- ½ cup chopped apple
- sprinkle of cinnamon
- MAPLE BROWN SUGAR
- ½ Tablespoon maple syrup
- 1-2 Tablespoons brown sugar
BANANA NUT
- banana slices
- 2 Tablespoons toasted walnuts
- ½ Tablespoon peanut butter
- ¼ teaspoon chia seeds
BERRY ALMOND
Step 1.
In a pot or saucepan, combine the oats, water or milk, salt, cinnamon, and vanilla (if using) and heat over medium-high heat.
Step 2.
After bringing the mixture to a gentle boil, lower the heat to a low simmer and cook, stirring often, for another five to seven minutes. When the oats are creamy and have absorbed the majority of the liquid, oatmeal is ready.
Step 3.
Move to a bowl and top with desired ingredients. For variations on maple brown sugar, apple cinnamon, banana nut, and berry almond, see the taste concepts above.
